The Charlie Experiment - Starts Here

Using bits bought from a local harware store, we set out having the first rig built. A light-weight tray, some rubber pipe, a massive syringe and black water-based paint. The canvas is laid in the tray, the syringe loaded with paint and the rig mounted in the rear of a Cessna C172 aircraft.

The plan is to release paint onto the canvas while placing the aircraft into spiral dives, steep turns and other such manoeuvres creating G forces between -1.5G and +3G. With a bit of luck the paint should go flying around the cockpit and hopefully spread on the canvas or at least make a mess. We're confident it will be the latter...

Weather permitting, flight leaves 9am Wednesday 9 May 2007 from Lanseria International Airport. Paint release at 7000ft overhead the Magaliesberg General Flying Area. Will post the results...

You guys are crazy. I think the only thing you going to do is design a mess..... in the cockpit that is. I hope its your own aircraft and not some poor air schools (Masha !!!). 2G's in a STALL, Thats a bit much, so good luck with that. And the spin will cause no change in the mess as it will be spinning with the a/c. Well i could be wrong or NOT. Better yet post some pics of you two after your 1st flight.

Thanks reed. The blog has been updated since the kids at the studio wrote the first post. We'll be relying on spirals and steeps not stalls... and the rig will be covered with plastic to avoid the re-upholstering bill - even we're not THAT crazy!... Um, so I was hoping Masha might convince you to let us on your little orange plane for the Bravo Experiment?

are you planning to sell you mess or is it just for fun?

Temur, this is a highly scientific experiment, but the art will go on auction at Southerby's in NYC. Bids start at $250,000 for originals and all proceeds go to buying AVGAS, cars, houses, designer jeans and the tax on the deposit on the Bombardier.

I look forward to the outcome. But reed is right, a stall at 2G is virtually impossible...

Forget the 2G. As stated, we will be operating between -1.5 and + 3G in spins and steeps. Now just look forward to the art already!

I await the pics with much anticipation...

So let me get this right, you're proposing to spill black acrylic paint in the cockpit of a C172 during steeps and spins? Are you frikken mad? The paint will obscure everything, including your DME and other vital instruments like the ASI and AI... so good luck with getting back to the airfield and especially landing. You really are crazy!

The DME is so not a VITAL instrument! All we need is good comms, an AI, ASI and if possible a DI and life is peachy! :) Love and bubbles. M

D-Dawg, good luck! You have my devious little brain already trying to figure out how to get the water-based paint exchanged for the real oil-based stuff.....without you knowing of course!

So the "charle experiment" didnt go as planned. If it ain't BOEING, I ain't going. Cant wait to see it all on Youtube. Grant

So does this mean we can take your plane next time? I'll stick for the JetA1. Although, I think we should do some ground experiments with jet-blast... I'm thinking we get bobfort to hold a canvas behind outboard No1 while we throw paint into the jet-blast... Brilliant!

HeHeHe... Like that will ever happen!

let's have an exhibition... :-)

Love it!

perhaps you can wangle a seat on the next shuttle. then you could work on a larger format canvas.

All i know is that declaring PAN PAN PAN is if there is an emergency in the aircraft that delas with fire...!
